Our Team
John Sabo
Founder & CEO
John Sabo is the founder and CEO of Future H2O-B and a professor in the Department of Coastal & River Science and Engineering in the School of Science and Engineering at Tulane University. In addition to leading Future H2O-B, John directs Tulane's ByWater Institute, a research institute dedicated to creating transdisciplinary and transformative research that advances the resilience of water resources in New Orleans, the Mississippi River Basin and in tropical river basins across the world.
With degrees in fisheries (University of Washington) and ecology (UC-Berkeley), John is by training a river food web ecologist whose research has been published in top journals, including Ecology, PNAS and Science. John has also developed quantitative, data-driven methods to connect hydrology to freshwater fisheries and aspects of riverine biodiversity. Across all of his work, John leverages his deep relationships with transboundary agencies, multilaterals, academics, NGOs, and corporations to co-develop credible, action-oriented science and tools.
Candan Soykan
Senior Vice President
Candan Soykan is Senior Vice President of Future H2O-B and an ecologist-turned data scientist who earned his PhD at Arizona State University, studying desert riparian-upland dynamics. His three postdocs were all focused on fisheries sustainability, the first two concerning bycatch, and the third a data-driven life-cycle model for salmon in the Sacramento River. Having grown more analytical with each successive postdoc he landed a position as a quantitative ecologist with the National Audubon Society, where he applied his statistical skills to modeling bird populations.
Living in San Francisco, the lure of data science was too great to ignore and so he traded academic conservation research for applied business work. His first position was with Verisk Analytics, a B2B corporation focused on the insurance, energy, and financial services sectors. More recently, he joined Enformion to help turn the company’s wealth of data assets into actionable business insights using data science tools and methods. Candan retains a strong interest in conservation and water sustainability, but now has 6+ years of business experience under his belt.

It has been a pleasure for the Mekong River Commission Secretariat to have worked with the Future H2O-B team. They share many of the same attributes that the Mekong River Commission Secretariat values: customer focus, resourcefulness, and the ability and sense of political sensitivity required to deliver products that work across a range of decision-makers and countries. They have the expertise to transform science into tools that are readily available to support and solve basin-scale problems.
